Here's something I've been tinkering with lately...

A tentative cover to a Maskarado trade paperback collection (collecting the first three issues, including the preview)...

The first page of issue #1, completely colored and re-lettered, with minor retouching...

It's something I'm hoping to get done, and I'm shopping around for a good distributor. That means it's gonna be a legit publication, not just "indie."

I'm also of two minds whether to leave the interiors in black & white (lower printing cost) or coloring it to give it that extra gloss.

What do you guys think?

It looks stunning. It would be nice to see Maskarado in full colors.

If you want to lower the publisher's overhead, you can have black and white inside pages, but say if you have 64 pager, then 16 pages of it can be alloted to a full color highlight, somewhat akin to a pin-up type of presentation. The balance will be used for the black and white pages. Depending on your printer's imposition, (which they can supply you), you can plan your art to fit that. It's good to have some black and white pages because black and white has its own dramatic effect as well.

What's more, it will give some respite for the readers' eyes. The only thing is, you have to plan which ones go to color and B&W so that you can draw your B&W with more shading than the ones you will be coloring.

In the end, everybody will be happy. Less moolah spent by the publishers, visual variety on the part of the readers, and for you the creator, will have a good time illustrating it.

But, what I really want to see from you is to create something like a full monty graphic novel that is not a superhero. I can feel that you have substantial talent to do so. You must explore this possibility for I can see a lot of promise in your work.

Thanks, Gio. :)

Fr. Jomari...

Thanks for the advice. I'll take that into consideration.

As for non-superhero work, don't worry. I've got two graphic novels in the works, one series (hopefully), and I'm also planning on coming out with a collection of short stories, all with no superheroes in sight. Hopefully one or all of them will see the light of day before I die. hehe.

Can't you go full-color and print it on "white newsprint"? I saw a mall magazine use that before. Maybe your friendly neighborhood printing press can recommend a more affordable paper? :)

I'm really intending on printing this on good quality newsprint, as opposed to bookpaper or glossy paper, since it will bring the cost down significantly. Printing really is the simpler part of publishing, what's really daunting is getting all the paperwork done and, of course, distribution.
