The Maskarado strip was missing yesterday, and sorry to say it will be missing for next Thursday, too. I've been swamped with work, and on top of that we had a team-building seminar yesterday, so I ddin't get to post a new strip.
Next week, I'll be on vacation, which means I'll also be taking a break from the internet for that duration.
Maskarado will be back the second Thursday of November. Promise.

Honoel A.Ibardolaza, a.k.a. HAI, recently posted on his website that his cousin had died. And over on Gerry's blog, I read that artist Vincent Kua Jr. has also passed away. It got me to thinking about my experience with the death of a friend when I was still a kid. I left this message on HAI's feedback section...
"It's really quite a shock when someone passes away, even moreso if that someone is still young. When I was in grade 5, I came home to hear the news that my best buddy (he was our neighbor) had died. I couldn't believe it, and rushed to the community blackboard to read the news myself. As I stood there in front of the board I still couldn't believe it. I rushed immediately to the funeral home beside our church, and saw him lying there in the casket. I still couldn't (or wouldn't) believe it. It was only when his mother came and hugged me did I realize the awful truth. We just stood there for a while, tears streaming from our eyes."
Every year at All Soul's Day, I still say a prayer for Andy (that's his name). I know he's in a better place now, but sometimes I still feel sad that he's gone. Who knows what he could have been by now? He always used to like doing magic tricks, and he was pretty good at it. He could have been a world-famous magician, or maybe something else entirely.
My only regret is that I've lost touch with his family after his death. I think I kind of retreated, not wanting to have any reminder of the loss.
But I still think of you, buddy. I know someday, we'll meet again.

WHATTA MAROON...
Okay, I said I'd post more pictures of the Komikon today because yesterday I forgot to bring my camera cable. Well, today I did bring the cable... but I didn't bring my camera.
Duh.
Well, for more pictures, just head on down to...

KOMIKON 2005!
Well, I'd say it was a success, since all tickets were sold out and they had to let people in by just stamping their wrists. It was the first time I got a booth/table and it was kinda draining but fun. I didn't get to roam around the Komikon much because I had to man my booth.
I got to meet all the artists and writers that I usually get to communicate with only online. Edgar Tadeo, Ner PedriƱa (who bore a faint resemblance to Jet Li in person), Gilbert Monsanto (with his wife, Glenda), Reg Ting... And got to meet some people I've met before all over again like Orvy Jundis (who made an impromptu souvenir program), Mannix Abrera, Ryan Orosco, Jonas Diego, Jac Ting Lim and Gerry & Ilyn Alanguilan. Thanks Jac for signing Jac Strips Again (with a li'l Maskarado sketch to boot). Mico Suayan also stopped by, and his works were just awesome!
Also finally got to meet Komikero Ryan Toledo, and I was pleasantly surprised that he was a big Maskarado fan. He asked for a sketch and I gladly obliged. Also got to meet fellow Thursday Web Ring-er Jerald Dorado.
Some other folks I met...
Lico Reloj... oh, sorry... the Fifty Peso Ninja stopped by the booth. Glad he didn't make with the slicey-dicey.
Meyo de Jesus, Mario Macalindong and the Guhit Pinoy folks. Awesome works!
Mrs. Coching, it was a pleasure talking with you. Jun Lofamia, one of the legends. My only regret is that I didn't get to have my picture taken with them.
Tabloid Komiks contributors Tatum Milambiling and Josel Nicolas also dropped by (though not together. hehe). Josel's work will be featured in an upcoming issue. Thanks for dropping by, guys!
My old college buddy Joraz also dropped by, and he's with Glass House Studios now. Hindi ka man lang bumili ng kahit ano! Ilokano ka talaga! But kidding aside, it was great seeing you again, man.
Met with Budjette Tan, Dave Hontiveros, Ka-jo Baldisimo (idol! Galing talaga ng NWA!), Marco Dimaano and old schoolmate Oliver Pulumbarit. Also saw Vin Simbulan of Comic Quest there, along with Andrew Drilon, who stopped by the booth to say hi.
Damn, there are just too many that I can't remember them all.
Thanks too to all the folks who bought our stuff.
Askals also sold very well. Both Bong Leal and Dodo Dayao were there to help in manning the booth.
Thanks also to Kuki, my bro Leander, and my nephew Jappy for helping run things. And too my officemate Arvin for just hanging out (hehe).
Thanks to Dennis Villegas for the Kenkoy book for Jade. I'll make sure to read it to her when she's old enough.
Hmmm... what else happened?
The folks at Fudge Magazine were asking various creators to have their pics taken, and Kuki and me (or would that be "I"?) were glad to oblige.
I also got interviewed by VJ Jmie (did I spell that right?) for ABC 5's Anime Ring Kaisho. I think it'll be airing on November 5 at around 3 or 3:30 pm. Kaya sa mga fans ko, panoorin niyo (Ah-cheh-che!).
RJ Ledesma also stopped by and got my contact info in case they wanted to do something for MANUAL Magazine. Thanks, RJ!
I was also asked by all-around good girl Syeri Baet to be one of the judges of the indie comic contest. It was a pleasure, Syeri.
There was also this guy who had a Blitzworx ID (didn't get his name) who was asking for sketches of pigs in armor from the artists there. I gladly obliged, but still I wonder why...
Got some indie fix, too. Istrong Repablik, the aforementioned NWA, Trese, Askals (of course), Psigns of the Seasons, Lexy Nance & Argus, Kunoichi Boy, Crest Hut Butt Shop (naubusan ako ng Dead Heart Stories... AARGH!), The Blurb, Jac Strips Again... forgot to buy Minsan Sa Panaginip (sorry, Jon! Will pick it up in Comic Quest), and I was tempted to get the collected Cresci Prophecies, but I had to pace myself. I'll get it in the future, Joanah!
I also got Dave Hontiveros' Praman novelette. Will get the other two in bookstores.
Sayang nagka-printing problems ang Blitzworx kaya di umabot yung magazine nila. Pati yung Fantasya anthology ng Psicom di rin umabot.
Congrats to Syeri, Jon, Lyndon and all the Komikon organizers! Sayang you missed it, Ariel!

MASKARADO FAN ART
Here are two pieces of fan art sent to me by Wylz Gutierrez and Gio Paredes. Thanks guys!
Maskarado & Orimar by Wylz Gutierrez
Maskarado & Kalayaan by Gio Paredes
Kalayaan is Gio's original creation. Gio may very well be Maskarado's biggest fan, and I'm really flattered that he likes the character so much. He sent me a story before teaming up these two heroes, and I'm currently in the process of drawing it. It may come out in a future edition of Tabloid Komiks, or as a back-up feature in the Maskarado comic. We'll see.
Here's my rendition of Kalayaan & Maskarado:
Ner Pedrina is also doing a Maskarado team-up with his character Sandata. I've mentioned this before in this blog, but you can also check out the art here and here.

PAHABOL PARA SA KOMIKON...
Komikon 2005 is almost upon us (this Saturday!), and I'd like to announce the meager offerings of my booth.
I'll be selling the latest issue of Maskarado, number 7, and also back issues of all the previous issues. Also available are Maskarado shirts and limited copies of all the issues of Tabloid Komiks.
Also, Dodo Dayao & Bong Leal's Askals comic book will be for sale.
There will also be keychains and polybags for sale.
I'll also be bringing some original art for anyone who'd like to browse through them. Not for sale, just to be clear about it.
I guess that would be it. Kitakits!

At long last... SIGLO: PASSION
This has been almost(?) two years in the making. I co-drew a story with Lan Medina, written by Nikki Alfar.
I was at Comic Quest last night and was chatting with Vin Simbulan. SIGLO popped up in our conversation, and he was happy to tell me that it was gonna be released later this year.
I was really excited and decided to put up the news on this blog, when lo and behold, Gerry Alanguilan decided the exact same thing and posted news about SIGLO on his blog, too. Talk about coincidences. He knows more about the details than I do, so visit to his blog for more info.
And I have to confess, I cribbed the image above from his blog, too. Hope you don't mind, Gerry.
I also have some preview pages of my work for Siglo, and you can find it here.

BLOG FILLER #3
Heto, para sa mga mahihilig sa Beauty Pageants. Since meron na namang panibagong contest na ganito, ang Miss Earth, this is a bit timely...
As you guys probably know, Miss Philippines won the Miss International 2005 crown and here is her winning answer:
Q: "what do you say to the people of the world who have typecasted (wrong grammar dito, dapat "typecast" lang, pero puwede na palampasin - Reno) filipinos as nannies?"
A: "I take no offense on being typecasted as a nanny. But I do take offense that the educated people of the world have somehow denegrated the true sense and meaning of what a nanny is. Let me tell you what she is. She is someone who gives more than she takes. She is someone you trust to look after the very people most precious to you - your child, the elderly, yourself. She is the one who has made a living out of caring and loving other people. so to those who have typecasted us as nannies, thank you. It is a testament to the loving and caring culture of the Filipino people. And for that, I am forever proud and grateful of my roots and culture."
Super lakas ng palakpakan! grabe!

TABLOID KOMIKS is somewhat of a labor of love for me, since it stems from my love of the comics medium, and I love the fact that I get to feature various creators. Some established ones, others not too well-known, and others who just want to get their creations out there.
So, it is with a heavy heart that I have to announce that I cannot continue publishing TABLOID in its current format. That is, it being given for FREE.
As much as I want to continue doing it that way, economics dictate that I have to at least charge what TABLOID costs me. It has been a heavy drain on my wallet, and the harsh reality of having to support a family weighs heavily on me.
It's up to the readers of TABLOID KOMIKS if they want to see it continue. I've calculated the cost of printing TABLOID, and it amounts to about 12Php a copy. So I'm running a poll here. Would you be willing to pay 12Php for a 12-page pamphlet (including covers) that features short black & white stories created by Pinoys? Just leave a comment to this post.
If enough people want TABLOID to continue, then the next issue, #5, will have a cover price of 12 pesos. I do NOT get any sort of profit from this 12 peso price tag. Truth to tell, if all copies don't sell... lugi pa ako. If there's not much response, then I have no choice but to cease publication.
Thanks to everyone who've supported this project. I really would like this to continue.
And to the various contributors who have submitted their stories, thanks, too. With enough support, we'll see your stories published.
Good day to everyone!
